The Leader Paints, the Manager Takes Snapshots

During the last quarter of the 19th century, many impressionist painters developed a strong hostility toward the art of photography.In the 1870s, Eadweard Muybridge developed fast camera shutters, more sensitive film, and remote devices to trip the shutters. As a result, he was able to freeze the motion of people and animals, capturing a fraction of a second, faster than the blink of an eye.

Kinko's Has Left The Building

In 1977, the press approached John Lennon for a comment on the death of Elvis Presley. Lennon remarked, “Elvis died when he went in the army.” As music historians note, Presley entered the army as a rock and roller, but returned as a crooner and movie star. The rebellious independence Lennon loved in Elvis was gone long before the bloated King died at the age of 42.

Control is Overrated

A budding entrepreneur recently asked what I considered the biggest challenge when trying to control the look and feel of individual outlets while expanding from 1 location to more than 1000. I think he asked the wrong question.

Shaking The Invisible Hand

A friend recently called me a “capitalist pig.” Well, as Oscar Wilde observed, “a friend is someone who stabs you in the front.” She was joking, but the term is so common it got me thinking about capitalism’s PR problem.
